Oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins: the chemistry for engaging with prospective students

Victoria Littler & Jonny Harper

Vepple / Revolution Viewing

Good stories and experiences evoke chemicals in your brain called neurotransmitters. In this session we’ll explore how oxytocin, dopamine and endorphins are key for making an audience connect with the stories you’re wanting to tell.

Oxytocin amps up the emotional connection between storytellers and their audience; dopamine is the reward hormone that gives us a feel-good rush, and an endorphin release is often why cliffhangers are so compelling and keep us hooked! But how can you make an audience feel these things through your website content and maximise the likelihood that their brain does actually release those neurotransmitters?

You don’t have to be a good storyteller or a neuroscientist to do great storytelling. Data shows that not only is it possible to embrace neuromarketing and storytelling principles in digital experiences, but when you do, students are much more likely to engage. In this session, we’ll show you how.

Key takeaways

  • Understand the neuroscience of storytelling and how this can drive engagement and action.

  • Learn how to use simple storytelling techniques in ways that have real impact.

  • Understand how to inspire an emotional connection with students and bring campus spaces to life.

  • Discover how a great digital experience increases brand affinity, engagement and action.
